Course Description
MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE
Grade level: 6, 7, and 8
Prerequisite: none
Length: three years
Middle School Science is designed to engage students in scientific process and the development of science understandings by asking them to take on the role of a scientist or engineer in order to solve real-world problems. When solving the relevant problems posed to them, students will investigate scientific phenomena via a blend of hands-on investigations, literacy-rich activities, and interactive digital tools. In addition to investigates, students will be asked to effectively collaborate with their peers and develop their own models and/or scientific explanations.
Science topics covered in this course
- during Year A include metabolism, genetic traits, thermal energy, oceans, atmosphere, climate, and weather.
- Year B science topics will include plate motion, rock transformations, phase change, chemical reactions, populations and resources, and matter and energy in ecosystems.
- Finally, Year C science topics include force and motion, magnetic fields, light waves, natural selection, Earth's history, and Earth, Moon, and Sun.
Course Competencies
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to satisfy the Grades 6-8 Wisconsin Standards for Science.
